Approach

We welcome you and your baby to experience

Baby C.A.L.M., which integrates a polyvagal-informed approach of

Lomi Keiki infant nurturing touch and therapeutic Lomi massage with

maternal relaxation and mindfulness techniques to promote

psychobiological health for the mother–baby dyad,

Combining touch with gentle movements, like the flow of the ocean, reminiscent of the womb, non-verbal communication and relaxation meditations

Infant Benefits

Human touch has been scientifically proven to release oxytocin, the 'bonding hormone'.

Touch enhances our mood, helps heal from trauma, and

improves the quality of the dyad relationship as well as:

  • Decreased stress hormones
  • Temperature regulation
  • Regulation of oxygen saturation
  • Heart rate stability
  • Improved sleep/alert cycles
  • Breathing regularity
  • Physical growth improvement(i.e., height, weight, head circumference)
  • Increased vagal tone
  •  Massaged babies show improved emotionality, sociability, soothability, temperament and better face-to-face interaction behaviors.

According to the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) health benefits for the baby may include improved self-regulation and sleep, stimulation of body systems (including digestive, hormonal, immune, and circulatory systems), joint mobility, and better coordination and body awareness.

Maternal Benefits

  • Documented reduction in postpartum/.postnatal depression and inter-relationship challenges.
  • Increased parent-infant bonding and secure attachment.
  • Improved breastfeeding relationship, including length and production by stimulating prolactin.

Mothers also report feeling more comfortable and confident caring for

their baby with a greater understand and response to their baby’s cues

Studies and Research

Babies

Mothers

Mothers

  • Preterm infants who receive stroking touch massage gain more weight and spend less time in the hospital compared to controls (Vickers et al., 2009).
  • Passive touch, as in skin-to-skin care of neonates has positive effects on physiological parameters such as the heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation (Bergman et al., 2004).
  • Mother-infant attachment increases with skin-to-skin care in comparison with newborns receiving conventional neonatal care (Conde-Agudelo and Díaz-Rossello, 2014).
  • Touch intervention in neonatal care has also been shown to have long-term implications. A study by Feldman et al. (2014) showed that children who received skin-to-skin care as neonates had attenuated stress response and better cognitive control at 10 years of age (Feldman et al., 2014).

Mothers

  • "Infant massage improves attitudes toward childbearing, maternal satisfaction and pleasure in parenting." (Vicenteet al (2017)., Infant massage improves attitudes toward childbearing, maternal satisfaction and pleasure in parenting, Infant Behavior and Development,.)
  • Mothers who performed massage on their infants had significantly lower maternal state anxiety than mothers whose infants received standard care (i.e., no massage; Afand, Keshavarz, Fatemi, & Montazeri, 2017). In a different study, mothers who performed infant massage reported being better adapted to motherhood and had greater confidence in their mothering abilities (Vicente, Verissimo, & Diniz, 2017). Other studies have found that mothers who perform infant massage have more rapid decline in depression symptoms, lower stress (Holditch-Davis et al., 2014), and lower anxiety (Feijo et al., 2006)
  • "Maternally-administered infant massage may benefit mothers of preterm infants by reducing anxiety, stress, depressive symptoms, and by improving maternal-infant interactions in the short-term.  " McCarty, et al (2023). Benefits of maternally-administered infant massage for mothers of hospitalized preterm infants: a scoping review. matern health, neonatol and perinatol

Accelerated mother-infant attachment as well as increased maternal sensitivity and child responsiveness have also been demonstrated among mother-child dyads through the implementation of massage therapy.
